Welcome to what will become, over the coming weeks, a brand new website devoted to the intriguing and colourful world of Chameleon Ware Art Pottery. Manufactured by George Clews & Co. in the Staffordshire town of Tunstall between 1914 and 1939, Chameleon Ware captures the essence of the Art Deco period, in design and influence. Ultimately, the site will include reference on patterns, shapes, backstamps and individual painters, as well as a detailed history of the Clews family, and how the factory came to be established. The History of George Clews & Co
The site will include a comprehensive history of Clews, not only as a factory producing iconic art pottery, but also of a family that had worked at the heart of the pottery manufacturing trade since the late 18th century.
The website is intended to complement Hilary Calvert’s seminal work; Chameleon Ware Art Pottery, A Collector’s Guide to George Clews, published in 1998. The site will act as a supplement to her book, not a substitute, and we are proud that Hilary has been involved since the early planning stages.

The Clews Family in Stoke on Trent
Ralph & James Clews, c1800-1870
Although this website will focus on the wares produced by the factory known as George Clews & Co, this was not the first pottery manufacturer to bear the Clews name. That honour belongs to two brothers, Ralph and James Clews, born in Newcastle under Lyne in the 1780s. The site will include a brief history of these distant ancestral forebears.
